CBG(COMPRESSED BIOGAS)

INTRODUCTION

  • Energy resources are required for growth and development of the country. Till date energy resources in the form of fossil fuels such as crude oil has been used all over the world which have been controlled by a cartel in the oil sector or by few countries. They control output and price of oil.
  • Usage of fossil fuels has contributed largely to the climate change and several problems in socio-economic sphere. Now these resources are on the verge of extinction. Hence the world is moving towards the use of renewable energy for energy safety & security.
  • Biomass is one of such resources that can be used for the production of renewable energy. It is abundant in quantity & available across the globe in every country.
  • Bioenergy can be produced from biomass. Biogas is a form of bioenergy that can be produced from different kinds of biomass such as cow dung, poultry litter, energy crops, agricultural residue, industrial waste and wastewater etc by means of microbial process.
  • It can be purified and compressed to produce compressed biogas (CBG) and used as fuel for vehicles in place of fossil fuels and cut GHG emissions.
  • Transport sector forms the backbone of economy in the country. It accounts for 30% global energy use & 14% of the total CO2 emission.
  • At present it is heavily dependent on oil and so is extremely vulnerable to changes in oil prices. Hence use of biogas as vehicular fuel makes a perfect case for compressed biogas(CBG) projects based on biomass in order to achieve sustainable energy future.
