DIGESTER

DIGESTER

  • digester (alternative: digestor) is a huge vessel where chemical or biological reactions are carried out. These are used in different types of process industries.

Solid State Digestion

  • The patented dry digestion process was developed as a continuous, thermophilic or Mesophilic process for the anaerobic treatment of richly structured substrates with a dry matter (DM)  content from 15 to 50%.
  • The digestion principle is based on a horizontal plug flow through a horizontal vessel (LARAN® plug-flow digester) with solely local mixing of the substrate by way of agitators. A  compact design  and robust construction characterize the digester, which can  either be cast in situ or made up from prefabricated concrete  elements.
  • The digester is equipped with agitators which are arranged transversely to the flow direction and prevent uncontrolled sedimentation or the formation of swimming layers. The  overlapping arrangement of the agitators guarantees targeted  local mixing of the substrate, optimum release of the gas bubbles  and reliable transportation of sediments to the digester discharge.  The agitator drives operate intermittently and thus with very low  energy consumption.

Liquid Phase Digestion

  • This is a widely used technology for biogas generation. Continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) or Gas Mix System are example of this technology. In this type of  technology, water is added to the feed stock so that %  of the total solids (TS) becomes 10-11% in the digester.  This is used for feed stocks that have Total solids (TS)  less than 20%.
  • In this type of technology, the water is mixed with the feed stock and it is fed to the digester continuously or in a batch process.
  • The mixture inside the digester is stirred continuously by means of agitators which are located at the periphery or at the  center. Hence the biomass inside the digester always  remains in circular motion. These types of digesters are  easy to install and maintain.
  • TS<20%
  • Water is added to feed stock to make 10% TS
  • Mixing: Propeller type mixers
